About Robertson
Officially founded in the mid-19th century, the Robertson Valley is affectionately known a The Valley of Wine and Roses. With exquisite natural splendor, the Robertson Valley lies at the foothills of the surrounding Langeberg and Riviersonderend mountains. Surrounded by breathtaking landscape, this beautiful area is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts with hiking, walking, cycling and horse riding trails in the surrounding mountains, and a spectacular vineyard backdrop. Situated just 90 minutes from the city of Cape Town, Robertson is among South Africa’s largest wine-producing areas. Classified as a coastal wine region, Robertson is comprised of nine wine production wards, namely Agterkliphoogte, Bonnievale, Boesmansrivier, Eilandia, Hoopsrivier, Klaasvoogds, Le Chasseur, McGregor, and Vinkrivier. With many family-run and boutique estates producing superior quality wines, Robertson is home to the so-called Big Six grape varieties (riesling, sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, pinot noir, merlot, and cabernet sauvignon).
With a low annual rainfall in the valley of the Breede River Valley, the Robertson region has a hot climate with dry summer winds. The vineyards along the region’s flood plains enjoy a wide selection of soil types from gravelly, lime-rich, alluvial soils, to red, clay loam and Karoo soils resulting in fruity, easy-drinking wines. Traditionally known for its production of white wines, the Robertson Valley is home to a selection of elegant blends from chardonnays, sauvignon blanc and Methode Cap Classique, shiraz and cabernet sauvignon. A favourite Cape retreat for food, wine, and outdoor festivals, the Robertson region is a family friendly winelands destination.
