The quaint town of Paarl falls along the scenic Cape Wine Route, and is a delightful little town that is rich with culture and history. Founded in 1687, Paarl’s landmark feature is a magnificent granite outcrop that was christened “Pearl Mountain”. The namesake of this pretty town, and now known as “Paarl Rock”, this unique feature represents the town’s humble beginnings. Rich with Afrikaans heritage, Paarl has grown into the lagest town along the Cape Wine route, with Vineyards winding between the residential streets, and a population of over 200,000. The main street is famous for stretching 11 kilometers, and is lined with historical architecture. Cape Dutch, Georgian and Victorian buildings, offer an attractive selection of beautifully maintained architecture. Paarl is deeply rooted in the Cape’s colourful winemaking history, and today offers a world famous selection of fine wines.
Paarl is one of the most scenic towns in the western Cape, directly translated to “Pearl”, the landscape reflects its renowned glory. This interesting and historical land is home to a large variety of grapes, offering a supreme selection of wines including Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage, Shiraz, Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc. The Paarl Wine Route is often affectionately known as the ‘Red Route’ because of this. Set just one hour’s drive from the cosmopolitan city of Cape Town, Paarl is well known for its pristine natural surroundings, and enlightening history. Paarl is the third oldest European settlement in the country, and its entire ambiance is reminiscent of a bygone era.
