Malaria Free Safari

Malaria free safari?

Tuningi Safari Lodge, Madikwe Game Reserve

When looking for a malaria free safari, for us, Tuningi ticks all the boxes when it comes to an all-round fabulous safari experience. Some of the team from Greatest Africa were there over Christmas recently and here are our thoughts.

Tuningi Safari Lodge is situated in the Madikwe Private Game Reserve, north west of Johannesburg sitting on the border of Botswana.  Not only is Madikwe home to the Big Five in abundance (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo) but it also has a healthy population of the African Wild Dog – a very rare species and fascinating to watch. Trust us, you’ll smell them before you see them!

A 165,000 acre reserve, Madikwe is also very beautiful; typical of the South African bushveld, it’s full of thick bush, flat savannah plains and undulating hills all at the same time – one evening we stood high on the top of a hill and watched the twinkling lights of Gabarone (Botswana) in the far distance as we sipped our game drive sundowners!

Plus for us – and we travelled as part of a family group – one of the best things about Madikwe is that it is a malaria free reserve – unlike the Kruger National Park and surrounding private reserves. This is a huge bonus especially if young kids (or elderly folk) are part of your group, both of which can react badly to anti-malaria medication.

Tuningi Safari Lodge was perfect – five star luxury with all the bells and whistles for the adults (8 secluded suites (incl 2 family suites) with private viewing decks, a spa and 2 pools) plus a wonderful kids program, babysitters and general warm welcome for the ‘littlies’ – quite rare for a 5* luxury lodge.  Kids are taken on their own special game drives and given ‘game viewing-related’ tasks to complete.  When they are not doing that they can jump around the pool on the main deck while elis and the resident black rhino saunter past the lodge (don’t worry they can’t climb right up to the lodge!).

It all makes for a very relaxing and fun safari experience both for the kids, but more importantly for the adults who can relax in the knowledge that willing staff are there to keep an eye on their brood!

If you’re not in the ‘family way’ then that’s no problem – we put you in the faraway suite no.8, near the private 2nd pool and it will be like your very own private safari holiday!

The food was top notch, the game rangers brilliant and the staff at the lodge discreet, professional  and friendly.  In short Tuningi, and Madikwe game reserve come highly recommended!  Contact us for a competitive quote now.
