Maasai Mara

The Maasai Mara – called the Masai Mara, or for short, the Mara – is the most famous game reserve in Kenya and the whole of Africa. It’s a top safari destination due to its massive population of leopard, cheetah, elephant, lion, buffalo, and antelope. During August and November each year, the Great Migration takes place here. Masses of wildebeest and zebra follow the rains on their 2,900 kilometer (1800 mile) circular journey. This wildlife spectacle is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa.

Named after Kenya’s famous Maasai tribe, the wide-open plains make game viewing a pleasure. The word ‘Mara’ means spotted in the local language because of the many trees that cover the landscape. Established in 1961 as a sanctuary, the Maasai Mara now covers 1,821 km2 (703 square miles). Due to the size of the game reserve, it can feel overwhelming booking a safari here; that’s why we always advise to use a travel agent when booking your Maasai Mara safari.
